SIM 1 (Phil 21-4)

Q For your first Scripture Interpretation and Meditation (SIM) paper, do the following steps: 1. Spend a few minutes reading the Phil 2:1-4 passage a few times. Think about what it means. Think about what main idea Paul is trying to communicate in these four verses. 2. Then, if you have not already done so, open the document "A Personal Inventory" and work through this activity. Give God time and space as you review this document. Aspects of pride and humility are listed here. Our natural tendency is to jump over to the second column (humility), but as you read and reread the first column (pride), God oftentimes brings a person or relationship to mind. Again, let him have some space and time with you on this. 3. Now, read (or review) Dr. Saucy's first two lectures on the heart (Saucy's Heart Lectures 1 and 2, assigned reading). What are a couple 'takeaways' (a key point or an idea that made an impression on you) that you gained from this article? 4. Finally, consider all three readings together. What correlations do you see between Phil 2:1-4, the Personal Inventory, and the Saucy lectures? Spend some time in prayer, asking God to show you how to relate to these readings on a personal level. What does God want you to see about yourself, especially in relation to the personal inventory? 5. Now, incorporate these reflections into a 1-2 page paper. Focus your discussion on what Phil 2:1-4 is about, but be sure to incorporate connections made from the other two readings. Be as honest and specific as you can in your discussion. SIM #1 should be about 1-2 pages, typed, double-spaced. It is due by 11:59 PM. Late papers will incur a deduction. Rubric for the SIM writing assignments The following are general guidelines for the grading of written assignments for this course. • A score of 9-10 means that the writer addresses and develops each aspect of the assignment and goes beyond the assignment prompt to address additional related material. There is an excellent flow to the writing, with no spelling or grammar errors. Interaction with materials is clearly articulated and reflections are relevant and specific. This is an EXCELLENT paper. • A score of 8- 8.9 means that the writer addresses each aspect of the assignment. This is a "good" paper. Good flow to the writing, with very few spelling or grammar errors. There is some interaction with materials and good attempt toward specific implications and application in reflections. This is a GOOD paper. • A score of 7-7.9 means that the writer addresses the appropriate topic, and partially fulfills assignment requirements. There may be grammar and spelling errors. Reflections are more general or non-specific. This is an AVERAGE/OKAY paper • A score of 6-6.9 means that the writer addresses the appropriate topic but omits most or all of the assignment requirements. This is a BELOW-UNIVERSITY-STANDARDS paper. • A score below 6-the writer is off topic or vaguely addresses the topic. See comment directly above.

After reading Saucy’s Heart Lectures 1 and 2, I realized that there has to be transition of my heart and the heart of every Christian continuously to grow in the Christian way of life. Moreover, there must be imbibing and designing of selfless approaches to Christian life by providing knowledge about such designs to Christian followers. Another important takeaway is that the heart must be able to control the mind of every Christian before decision-making. This is because the heart of every Christian must try to imbibe the most sacred heart of Jesus. If there are attempts made to imitate Jesus’ heart, Christians will be making selfless decisions and never considering their decisions and actions to be harmful for societal members.
